In the historic atmosphere of Markiz, :mentalKLINIK creates a timeless microclimate that opens space for contemporary encounters. AWFULLY MARVELOUS, realized in collaboration with PİLEVNELİ, celebrates an ending as the beginning of something new, inviting visitors into an imaginary time where the unexperienced can be experienced. By making visible the tensions between destruction, humor, and norms, the artist duo questions our consumption habits and form-oriented world, where loyalty has been replaced by transience and ephemeral relationships.
AWFULLY MARVELOUS combines :mentalKLINIK’s darkly humorous artistic approach with Tuğana Okan Nalçacı’s (Cutie Cake Co) delectable interventions, delivering an experience that disrupts expectations. In contrast to traditional presentation aesthetics, the far-from-ideal Awfully Marvelous celebration cake challenges the absolute dominance of visual appeal. The tension between taste, texture, and form transforms into an ironic narrative about how dining rituals intertwine with social prestige.
Phantom Sparks, a sound installation created by :mentalKLINIK in collaboration with Orkun Şentürk, reshapes gossip, rumors, current debates, and social rituals within the wheezing background of the attention economy. AI-generated conversations echo through the patisserie as if everyone were there at that very moment. These fragmented, intermittent dialogues reflect the disordered flow of information in social media and the digital age, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. This experience, where our concretized lives turn into a celebration cake, draws visitors into an after-party state, suspended between melancholy and a sense of hollow happiness.
Embracing both creation and destruction at once, AWFULLY MARVELOUS seeks to reclaim lost emotions and exchanges, offering participants a moment where this magical venue comes to life once again.
